Filmed from 1974-1984; Little House on the Prairie is an American Western television series, starring Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert. It’s about a great family who lived on a farm in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, in the 1870s and 1880s. It’s all based on the books written by the real Laura Ingalls Wilder. I loved every book as a child, I wanted pigtails, bonnets, a horse named Bunny, to wear calico dresses and live in one room with my family in a log cabin. Ma baked the bread and pies while Pa worked at the sawmill. After school we all would come home and do chores together, study by candlelight and then all go to sleep with the fire crackling and Pa playing the violin.
Need, I say more? Almost 40 years after the show premiered it was pure magic remembering all those feelings I had as a young girl about Laura Ingalls by watching the episodes with my daughter. Funny, we both hated Nellie and Mrs. Olsen, loved Ma and Pa and for sure agreed that Almanzo was dreamy. I also took a new lesson from my re-run marathon. The sound of Pa’s wagon wheels brought Ma running out of the little house with a big smile and saying, “Oh, Charles!” So I try and give an “Oh, Thomas” greeting every now and then! True Confession.
